AUTISM

UNDER IDEA, AUTISM IS DEFINED AS: “a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, usually evident before age 3 that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with ASD are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences. The term does not apply if a child’s educational performance is adversely affected because the child has an emotional disturbance” [34 C.F.R. 300.8(c)(1)]

Under MA eligibility, Autism is defined as "a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction." The term shall have the meaning given it in federal law at 34 CFR §300.8(c)(1).

Children's Hospital Autism Language Program
The Autism Language Program (ALP) at Boston Children's Hospital is a program specifically designed to help children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder communicate and learn more effectively.

The Asperger/Autism Network (AANE) works with individuals, families, and professionals to help people with Asperger Syndrome and similar autism spectrum profiles build meaningful, connected lives. We do this by providing information, education, community, support, and advocacy, all in an atmosphere of validation and respect.
