The Individualized Education Program Process
Individualized Educational Programs Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) are a cornerstone of special education. The IEPs outlines the services a student with disabilities will receive, where those services will be provided, and educational goals for the student. The members of the IEP team work together to develop the student’s IEP. The IEP Team is composed of the special education teacher(s), appropriate general education teachers, appropriate related service personnel (occupational therapist, speech-language therapist…), a local education agency representative, and the student, if appropriate.
The Parents's Notice of Procedural Safeguards is a fifteen page document that provides information about the rights of families with children with suspected or confirmed disabilities. It is also a great tool for educators to know and have as a reference. Here is a 37-page Guide to Special Education for Families. It is also a great guide for new educators and paras.
Inclusion checklists are great tools for educations to think about and implement inclusive practices in your school and individual classrooms. Here are a few versions: Inclusion Checklist, Including Children with Special Needs, UDL Checklist, How do you Teach?, Quality of Inclusion, Questions to Consider, How Does Your Classroom Work?, Participation Rating, Inclusion Strategies and Intervention Site, and Classroom Observation Checklist.
