Benefits of Apps on iPadsThere are tons of free apps that support the learning of students which teachers do not know about. I work for the Boston Renaissance and we use a lot of literacy and phonemic awareness apps on our iPads. These apps help students in couple ways; one being that they are interactive and two they are helping the kids learn in a fun way. Giving instructions verbally is important but for many of my students with social emotional disorders they need these tools to help them complete work. I use iReady on iPads or computers which allows students to read along using their finger as a pointer. Them hearing the story allows them to learn pronunciation and the context of what's being said. This is very beneficial for ELL students since they struggle with learning how to read and write in a new language. There tons of free reading, writing, and phonemic games you can download to get students learning in a fun way. Many of my students who were on IEPs this past year needed the extra support and this technology constantly in class. In addition students are getting sensory out of this by touching the screen and being interactive. For example when they read stories on an iPad and they need to hit the "turn the page" button or when they are asked to repeat and so they repeat the word. They learn how to utilize a book and how to treat a book this way. There are many apps that are not free that would also be a great support but these are some of the apps that i have research.
