Phonics Instruction

Picture
Picture
Reading by the Rules is a multi-sensory, structured word study program. The program uses multi-sensory techniques (visual, auditory, tactile, movement, story) and a consistent scope and sequence. Instruction is explicit, rule-based, and incorporates frequent review.  (See lesson plan format suggestions.) Visuals and stories bring context to the student which aides in retrieval and fluency of challenging sounds and sequencing skills. Stories and visualizations are phased out once the student can quickly access the phonetic structure. Visualization Cards are easily made and can be used in lessons, work activities and interactive games. Different sized cards (ninth, sixth), decoding chart sheets and lesson plans/schedulescan be customized.

Here is a chart for the consonant sounds.  Here is a chart for the vowel sounds.  What We Know About How to Teach Phonics Patricia M. Cunningham and James W. Cunningham is a good article that describes some of the research and key elements in teaching phonics.  Phonics A to Z is another resource for teaching phonics.  It has many ideas and resources.
