Inquiry Project
Inquiry-based learning often begins with a specific need (question to answer, problem to solve) or a keen interest in something that is not well understood. Inquirers will often identify and research issues and questions to develop their knowledge or solutions. This type of learning is closely related to thinking, reflection and development of ideas that often lead to new perspectives and insights that we not previously held.
Students will select a single topic in special education. Please select a topic of personal interest and usefulness as it often much more rewarding when you have selected a topic of interest that you have not had the opportunity to research. Topics could include: laws/history, specific disability, specialized instructional approach, specific learning environment, etc. Students will research and share their content by producing a digital reference tool (uploaded on the course website). You may choose to work with another classmate but be sure to duplicate the amount of content for your project. Approval for you topic will occur by class 2.
Examples of Content:
a. Disability: (etiology, characteristics (including any related health issues), incidence and prevalence, affect on development, medical interventions, …). Include a video, images and short text content with web resources for further information. Description of Intervention/Theory: Include a video, images, examples, and short text content with web resources for further information.
b. Instructional Strategy/Program (academic and social): Description and purpose; Research behind the approach; How can it be used (settings, students); Examples of the approach; Resources for implementation
Bibliography: All references and resources should be clearly available and seen on your webpage (images, links to articles, YouTube video links, graphs, teaching materials, etc.).
Inquiry Project Components (double content for partner work):
a. Title of Your Inquiry Project
b. Summary (self produced)
c. Images (> 4) (charts, diagrams, examples, books) with description (sentence or two under the image) with reference to where the content was found.
d. Video Content (2) (description, strategies, etiology, example, etc.)
e. Strategies, Research, and Resources (> 4) (documents)
f. Audio player (> 1 minute) (your voice discussing the topic)
Presentations will be organized in a protocol led, small group presentation. The presentation will last no longer than 5-8 minutes. Be prepared to answer questions and bring out the essential information for teaching practice, student learning, and inclusion. You will be using the webpage to support your discussion. Presentations will occur on class 6.
