Class was very informative today. Talking about FAPE, IDEA and giving scenarios was very helpful during class. Taking the Academic Evaluation step by step also was helpful to take the source, Joe,and breaking down the OT and his case. The scavenger hunt was good to work in partners and understanding RTI and P.L 94-142.

Today was filled with a lot a very useful information, I was especially surprised about the 504 plan, still can not believe it is only one page but can cause a teacher a significant amount of damage if not followed correctly. I look forward to reading Joe’s Occupation Therapy Evaluation, I am learning so much about Joe that I never expected.

Overwhelmed! I feel like we need another semester to really tease out the differences, and I am really thinking- how will I know what strategies to use? What are the strategies?

Todays class was filled with a lot of information that is very practical to be knowledgable about. I am learning a lot of information about IEP and the IEP process. The IEP process seems daunting at time but very worthwhile to be learning about this before having to write one by myself. This class to very helpful and informative.

I agree Sarita, so much paperwork and legal jargon! I'm hoping that over time and through experience all of these different plans and the how-to's become second nature, but currently I'm having a hard time thinking about when myself out in the field trying to manage everything as well as teaching all students so that they understand and can move forward.

I would have to agree today's class was filled with too much information! I am definitely going to have to go over everything once more to full comprehend it all. I am glad that we are doing the pre-referral in class together and will be practicing with the other forms. I am definitely more of a hands-on/visual learner.

The content of IEP law is dense and critical to a special educator. Our primary goal is to do great work with our most fragile children. That includes knowing what and how to teach, consulting with other educators to support them in the classroom (accommodations and modifications), supervising the aides/paras, supporting parents through this process and speaking up for the rights of these kids. On top of that you have progress reports, IEPs, evaluations, data collection and regulations to follow. When the day is done you will be most proud of the work you did with a child, a teacher or a parent and not if you filled the piece of paper out perfectly. If the IEP can somehow capture the real work of what we do then we have done well by that family and child. My goal is that we learn the IEP procedures but most importantly we learn how to write from your heart and passion for this work. You will always have a manual to refer to, promise. You will also always have your weebly.... gina

Tuesday's class was a pleasure in knowing the ins and outs of what the procees is to complete necessary paperwork in order to have a child serviced. At first it felt overwhelming but as we broke it apart as a group, took it step by step, it made more sense. Even in the my MA in Ed courses were not this hands on.

I think it is great that we are getting the practice with the IEP process! Even though it seems overwhelming, I hope that with the knowledge we gain from this class we will get get better with practice. One of the most important things I think I will take away is to remember what the whole point of the process is intended for - to help children be successful in school. It is also helpful hearing who we can go to for support when we are expected to do this on our own.

Good point Gina, we have to just remember what is most important. And also most instructors probably would not go step-by-step with us through the process so it's much appreciated.

I think it is really important to remember that the IEP needs to move the child along from where they are now and not where he/she needs to be in a context of his peers.

It is very important to make sure that you put the child first and make accommodations that are going to enable the child to be successful in their classroom environment. Although there are a lot of steps to the IEP process in the end all the work is worth it to benefit the child.

The IEP seems like a very overwhelming process. There is paperwork that needs to be filled out for each student which seems like it will be very time consuming. Going through it step by step I think will really help us understand the process.
