Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that people are born with. It is a language processing disorder that causes the brain to interpret information differently. This disorder can hinder reading, writing, spelling, and speaking depending on the individual. It is often associated with difficulties decoding, spelling, and accurate word recognition. All of which fall under phonics and phonemic awareness. Dyslexia is a learning disability that has severity levels, which means that it affects people differently. Some students struggle with word or letter reversals (pot vs top, d vs b), writing on paper what they are thinking, pronouncing words, identifying syllables, etc. The great thing about this learning disability is that it is often seen in the beginning years of a students education. The earlier that the disability is diagnosed the sooner the student can receive appropriate help to better their learning. Once the student begins receiving appropriate services it is very likely that he/she will become a successful learner.
