Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) has been used to help children with autism and related developmental disorders since the 1960s. Behavior analysis is a validated way to understanding behavior and how the environment affects the behavior. In this context, “behavior” refers to actions and skills and “environment” refers to any influence, physical and/or social, that might alter or be altered by one’s behavior. Behavior analysis focuses on the concepts that explain how learning takes place. By functionally assessing the relationship between targeted behavior and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior. The ideas and techniques of ABA have helped a wide variety of learners gain different skills, from healthier lifestyles to learning a new language over the years.
