Marian Wright Edelman
I was taught that the world had a lot of problems; that I could struggle and change them; that intellectual and material gifts brought the privilege and responsibility of sharing with others less fortunate; and that service is the rent each of us pays for living — the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time or after you have reached your personal goals.

Remember- the first 10 phone calls to parents should be about happy things! I am happy to say that I know so much more about autism and children on the spectrum. THANK YOU!! I needed this reading, and the discussion.

As I go through the IEP to rewrite it I'm finding it tricky to get that balance between acknowledging Joe's needs with his accomplishments and successes. I'm trying to rewrite it in my own words and am finding it is taking me longer than I had expected. As to the above quote, it would be nice if everyone was taught that we can all do our part to help others, but I don't agree that service is not something to do in your spare time.

I really like this quote. It is important to live life to the fullest. Life is not something you just do in your passing but it is something you life. It is our jobs as teachers to show children the joys of life.

My life is all about my personal kids and the kids in my life. I want what's best for them and I live doing the things I didn't get to do when I was younger and not yet as an adult. I want my own kids to experience life to the fullest and taking the life lessons that will mold them into a better community member.

This quote was a very good one. I understood it as Life is always going to happen around you, dont let it pass you by or try to pick it up after you feel accomplished. I understand it as do the best for you and everybody you want to help and touch in your lifetime.

This was a great quote I believe everyone always takes life for granted. It should be about doing what you love most with the people that you care for and love. Children should learn that everything that happens in life is a great opportunity and they should take chances and do something 'outside the box'.

I had to read this quote a few time before I was able to get a real sense of what it was talking about. As teachers we sense that we can save every child that walks into our classroom. We struggle each year but it is our responsibility to share our knowledge with them. It is a privilege or a goal that we strive for each year but at the same time it the ultimate goal when see the children striving and learning.

I really like this quote. I think that everyone could benefit from reading it and can apply it to their lives. This could be academically related or not and can be applied to so many areas in life were people take so much for granted and do not reach out as much as they should and share the gifts that they were given to the world. I think that many people in our society are very egocentric and do not think of how they can help others. Special education is a field that you must give so much of yourself and your time and give up your personal goals to give need to others.

I think that this is a very useful quote for not only people in education but that all people can use in their everyday lives. Sometimes you need to put your personal goals to the side for benefit of others. This is especially true in education and especially in special education.
